PFAS
November 4th, 2023, 1:00 PM at Harborside Middle School
Come join us for a community discussion on how to reduce your child’s exposure to PFAS. Our speaker Dr. Sten Vermund, MD, PhD. is an epidemiologist and pediatrician at the Yale School of Public Health. He served as dean of the school from 2017-2022, is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and is president-elect of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. Dr. Vermund will share how to reduce your family's exposure to PFAS and answer your questions.
Modern chemistry has introduced products that have no counterpart in nature and cannot be broken down by natural mechanisms. Dr. Vermund will discuss so-called “Forever Chemicals” such as PFAS (Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) and their health risks for children and families.
Exposure to PFAS has been linked to delayed brain development in children, thyroid cancers, liver, and kidney damage. PFAS is present in almost all consumer products and accumulates in settled dust where toddlers and young children spend time closer to the ground.
