Smoke Alarms Save Lives

"The majority of fatal home fires happen at night when people are asleep.  Smoke alarms can alert you to danger and give you time to escape!"

Choosing your alarm

If your home was built prior to October 1, 1978, battery operated smoke alarms are required.  Homes built after 1978 are required to have alarms powered by household current as well.  First, determine which type of alarm you need.

If you are choosing a battery-operated alarm, we recommend the "Long-life" 10-year battery models.  These can be found at most home improvement stores.

Alarm locations

Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside of all sleeping areas.  If possible, install an alarm in all bedrooms and living areas.  (refer to installation photo below)

Note:  It is not recommended to place smoke alarms in bathrooms or kitchens.

Additional installation tips

1) On floors without bedrooms, install alarms in the living rooms and/or near the stairways to upper floors.

2) Mount alarms on the ceiling whenever possible, and at least 4" from the nearest wall.

3) Do NOT mount an alarm within 3' of a bathroom door or forced-air register.

4) Basement alarms should be mounted near the stairway to the floor above.
