Private Hydrant Maintenance

 

The Office of the Fire Marshal requires all private fire hydrants to be inspected and tested biannually.  Any deficiencies found, are to be corrected immediately.

 

The inspection and testing is required to be completed in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.  The inspection reports are to be forwarded to this Office upon completion.

A general summary of the required testing is:

A clear access of not less than 36" is provided around the hydrant

Full flow test for not less than 1 minute

Full drainage in not less than 1 minute

Hydrant caps shall be cleaned and lubricated

Proper condition and operation of all caps, stems, plugs, and treads shall be ensured
