DMV Clearances

In accordance with CGS 14-33, delinquent motor vehicle taxes are reported to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.  Renewal of registration(s) cannot be obtained until all motor vehicle taxes in your name are paid in full.

If an immediate DMV release for registration is needed, payment must be made by cash, money order, or certified check in the Tax Collector's office.  Payments made by debit/credit card will take 2-3 business days to clear with DMV.  Payments by check or online electronic check will take 10 business days to clear with DMV.  No exceptions will be made.

If your account is with a collection agency, please allow additional time to clear from time of payment. Estimated 10-12 business days.

Payments are applied to the oldest outstanding fees, interest, and tax first (CGS 12-144b). Failure to receive a bill does not invalidate the tax or your responsibility to pay (CGS 12-130).  Interest is charged at the rate of 1.5% per month from the due date, subject to a $2.00 minimum (CGS 12-145, 12-146).  The Tax Collector does not have the authority to waive interest, no exceptions will be made.

If a bill is BLOCKED online, please call the office at 203-783-3217 for more information. A common reason is that back taxes may also be owed.
