June 2014 Newsletter

Welcome to the Milford Public Library!

Summer is coming!  One of the best things about the warm weather is how it gets people out of their homes and socializing more. This summer there is even more to do as the City of Milford celebrates it’s 375th anniversary. The Library is very pleased to be part of the celebrations and we  are hosting some special events here at our building.

We will be kicking off celebration week with an entertaining journey of songs and stories performed by Tom Callinan on Friday, June 6th at 7:00pm. The Library will be transformed for the evening into an exploration of Milford past and present, with music, stories, and Milford photos on display.  Mr. Callinan, Connecticut’s first “Official State Troubadour” has performed extensively throughout the region, both as a solo act and as a  member of the popular folk band, The Morgans. Please join us for this free, family fun event; no reservations are required.

The following week, Wednesday, June 11th, 5:00-8:00pm, Milford creativity will shine as we host a local author extravaganza!  Throughout the Library, authors of adult and children’s books will be arranged at tables, ready to sign books, share insights, or talk about the writing process.  For those in the community who are aspiring writers we will also be hosting a bookSLAM!  Bring your writing, share a bit with the audience and be prepared for applause and critiques.

The Library is also a drop off site for submissions for the City-wide time capsule.  All residents are  welcome to submit an item  for the time capsule, which will be buried on the grounds of the Parsons Government Center and opened 25 years from now. Submission instructions can be picked up at the library or various establishments throughout the City. You can also print the submission guidelines HERE.

To help you get in the spirit of the celebrations, the Library is selling  anniversary merchandise,  created by the 375th Anniversary Committee. Stop by the Library Circulation Desk  for a commemorative t-shirt, hat,  glass, or ornament.

If all these celebrations pique your interest in our City’s history, remember the Library has a great collection of local history books and photos, as well as a dedicated local History Room.

Don't Miss Out...

Please Note:

Many of our online resources do require you to have a Milford Public Library card for access. If you are a  Milford resident and don't yet have one, please stop by the Library to get started.
