Marine Patrol

The Marine Unit is responsible for patrolling the waters adjacent to Milford, including Long Island Sound and the Housatonic River, an area of about 40 square miles.

The Marine Unit consist of 15 officers who respond to emergency calls such as boaters in distress, sinking vessels, vessel fires, missing boats or persons around the shoreline, and medical emergencies. In addition to normal patrol unit members also monitor the security of critical infrastructure. In addition to enforcing State and Local laws and regulations, they perform safety inspections of vessels in a proactive effort to increase the safety of those who using local waterways. Marine unit members work closely with the United States Coast Guard, state and other local police marine units. To accomplish their mission, the Marine Unit is staffed as needed and members are capable of responding to calls for service year round.

The primary vessel for patrol and responding to calls for service is a 34’ North River Valor Patrol vessel equipped with an enclosed cabin, navigation, communication, side scan sonar, and FLIR (thermal imaging infrared camera) which was obtained through the 2012 Port Security Grant Program. The vessel is also designed to accommodate the department's SCUBA divers during training and dive operations. The Marine Unit also utilizes a 19’ Rigid Hull Inflatable.
