Marine Units

The mission of the Milford Fire Department Marine Unit is to protect lives and properties, provide emergency medical services, search and rescue capabilities and environmental protection on Long Island Sound and its tributaries.

Milford Fire Department completes this mission with two boats. “Marine 1” a 27 foot aluminum hulled fire boat with a 1000 gallon per minute fire pump capable of pumping AFFF foam through hand lines or master streams as well as “Marine 2” a 19 foot rigid hull inflatable rescue boat.

“Marine 1” is used to provide firefighting capabilities, advanced life support, search and rescue with side scan sonar and the ability to deploy containment booms in the event of a hazardous material release anywhere in Long Island Sound or its tributaries.

“Marine 2” is used for search and rescue and side scan sonar operation in areas where “Marine 1” cannot access.

Both vessels are used together for side scan sonar operations. “Marine 1” performs the side scan operation and “Marine 2” stands by in the area with divers ready to enter the water as soon as “Marine 1” detects and object of interest.
