Position Description


Title:                  Director
Department:             Permitting & Land Use (DPLU)
Location:               70 West River Street, Milford

Purpose of Position:  Supervise and direct DPLU divisions, Building Inspection, Planning & Zoning, and Inland Wetlands, to ensure that: applicants are guided expeditiously through the permitting process, compliance issues are investigated and resolved, and codes and regulations are enforced.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervise, set priorities, and delegate daily tasks and functions of DPLU component divisions and its personnel.
  • Develop and implement an efficient system for transmitting permit application materials.
  • Implement appropriate technological improvements.
  • Report work accomplished to the chief elected official (Mayor).
  • Attend job-related meetings, some of which may occur outside of the normal business workday.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:  At least five years upper level management experience is required. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Proven track record of managing a workforce with varied levels of skill and experience. Familiar with municipal budgetary practices. Flexibility. Ability to work effectively with the public, permit applicants, and other City department personnel.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
  • Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the permitting and land use process.
  • Knowledge of governmental operations – particularly at the municipal level – is preferred.
  • Skilled in operating a personal computer and related software.
  • Successful experience dealing with the public is essential.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with colleagues, subordinates, the public, and elected and appointed City officials.
Salary Range:  +/-$95,000
