Position Description


Title:  Assistant City Attorney  - f/t
Department:     Legal
Location:       City Hall, 110 River Street, Milford, CT

Purpose of Position:  Under administrative direction of the City Attorney, provides legal advice and prepares legal opinions for the City in matters requiring interpretation of State, Federal and local laws, regulations and contracts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Researches legal issues.  Prepares appropriate communications.
  • Reviews City contracts for legal sufficiency.
  • Assists in drafting ordinances and various regulations.
  • Attends board and commission meetings and presents legal advice.  Some meetings may occur outside of the normal business workday.
  • Administers the Legal Department in the City Attorney’s absence.
  • Reports work accomplished to the City Attorney.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:  Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school.  Must be a member in good standing of the Connecticut Bar.  Has demonstrated the ability to manage multiple priorities, while adhering to established time frames, deadlines and performance standards.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
  • Thorough knowledge of civil law, particularly related to municipal government.
  • Skilled in operating a personal computer and related software.
  • Ability to research complex issues and to render sound opinions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively.
  • Demonstrated skill in drafting pleadings, briefs and memoranda.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with superiors, colleagues, subordinates and the public.
Salary Range:  $70,000 – $80,000
