Demolition Instructions for the City of Milford
Building Inspection Department
The following list is not all-inclusive, but only to be used as an example. The application for a demolition permit must comply with Chapter 541 of the CT General Statues.
- If a building is over 75 years old (as determined by item #7 below), a Notice of Intent to Demolish sign needs to be posted at the premises for 30 days prior to demolition and issuance of a demolition permit, pursuant to the City of Milford Code of Ordinances §6-6. (You can obtain the proper signage from the Building Inspection Department.)
- A copy of the demolition contractor’s license with consumer protection of the State of Connecticut.
- Certificate of insurance from the contractor with the City of Milford, 70 West River St., Milford, CT 06460 as the certificate holder.
- Letters of disconnect from all pertinent utilities to the Milford Building Department.
- Letter (certified or registered) to all adjoining property owners informing them of the demolition to take place.
- The permit application to be signed by the building owner and the demolition contractor.
- Applicant must show verification of when building was built through Tax Assessor database.
- Survey of the building(s) to be demolished identifying any hazards (ex. Asbestos, lead).
- Copy of letter to State (DEP) to commence with abatement process.
- A letter of final survey analysis indicating that building is free from hazards.
- Provide portable fire extinguishers as necessary.
- Contact Fire Department to inform of demolition: 203-878-5991
- Describe safety precautions that will be in place during demolition.
- Provide construction documents, at least two sets of site drawings identifying the area(s) to be demolished. Show dimensions (i.e.: distances to lot line, other buildings and street).
- A preliminary inspection may be required.
- Call for inspection before removal of footing and foundation.
- Call for inspection when building site is backfilled and leveled.
